Support for young researchers planning to submit an abstract for the 2021 Congress

As indicated in the June newsletter, iHEA is planning a program of activities to strengthen health economics research capacity, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The first component of this initiative to be launched will be support for young researchers who would like to submit an abstract for the 2021 Congress. This is intended to promote diversity in congress participants both from a geographic and career stage perspective.

A webinar will be held on September 28th to provide practical advice on writing a successful abstract. The webinar will have simultaneous translation into some languages other than English to reach the widest possible audience. We encourage everyone with limited experience of abstract writing to participate in this webinar.

We value your inputs - please participate in very brief upcoming surveys
We are grateful to the many members who contributed recently to our Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Survey. We recognize that you are probably becoming 'survey weary', but we would like to ensure that our members' views are taken into account when planning our activities.

We will shortly be mailing members with requests to participate in two short surveys - each only have a few questions and would take just a few minutes of your time. These are:
  • A survey to get your inputs on key aspects of the virtual 2021 iHEA Congress
  • A survey on priorities for teaching and research capacity strengthening in low- and middle-income countries

We appeal to members to participate in these surveys ... we value your inputs.

iHEA Mentoring Program
In September the Professional Development Subcommittee will open up a second year of applications for iHEA's mentoring program. Interested mentors and mentees fill out a short application and are matched. iHEA has developed a highly rated guide to mentoring relationships that participants find useful for setting expectations and then meeting digitally, over the course of a year.

In  2019 - 2020 iHEA matched 55 mentor mentee pairs from around the world and has been working to improve the experience for the coming year.

Congress News
Call for expressions of interest to serve on the iHEA Scientific Committee Review Panel
iHEA is currently seeking expressions of interest from experts in Health Economics to serve on the Review Panel of the Scientific Committee for the 2021 iHEA Congress

We are looking for abstract reviewers with research expertise covering the full spectrum of fields within health economics. These broad fields are:
  1. Health beyond health care services: non-medical production of health and the value of health
  2. Demand and utilization of health services
  3. Supply of health services
  4. Health care financing and expenditures
  5. Economic evaluation of health and care interventions
  6. Evaluation of policy, programs and health system performance
  7. Specific populations
  8. Cross-cutting themes and other issues
Full details of the sub-fields within each of these fields can be found here. Those expressing an interest in serving on the Review Panel will be requested to identify several sub-fields in which they have expertise, so you are encouraged to review the list of sub-fields before completing the application form.

iHEA would like to especially encourage mid-career researchers to self-nominate for the Scientific Committee Review Panel. Final decisions on membership of the panel will need to accommodate gender and geographic diversity as well as providing adequate coverage of the broad fields and sub-fields. Expressions of interest should be submitted online here. Please note: If you served on the Scientific Committee for the 2019 congress, you should not complete this form; you will be contacted directly to find out if you are willing to continue serving on the Review Panel.

Nominations for the Review Panel close on 12 October 2020.
