Subject : Reminder: GBD 2020 Non-fatal Causes & Risk Factors Preliminary Estimates
Received On : 10.07.2020 16:02

Dear Collaborators,

Reminder: We are pleased to share with you Non-fatal Causes and Risk Factors preliminary estimates for GBD 2020. Reviewing preliminary estimates is an opportunity available exclusively to GBD Collaborators. This is your chance to review the levels and trends for risk factor exposures and non-fatal causes, or countries that interest you, and to inform us of any major concerns.

Please note that the deadline for sending comments is July 13, 2020 at 11:59pm PDT.

Thank you in advance for your time and effort at this important stage.

I. Reviewing the Preliminary Estimates

To enable you to share feedback as efficiently and easily as possible, we have framed two critical questions regarding these estimates. We would greatly appreciated your feedback on these questions:

1. Based on your expertise in an area or location:
i. Are there cases where the level or trend of a specific cause or risk exposure does not match the data or risk profiles of a country? AND
ii. Are there cases where the level or trend of disease prevalence, incidence, exposure level, or other indicators due to a specific cause or risk does not match the data or epidemiological profiles of a country?
2. Are there any data sources we used that are non-representative or that you consider unreliable?

II. Accessing Non-Fatal Causes and Risk Factor Exposure Preliminary Estimates

You may review both risk factor exposure and non-fatal estimates using the EpiViz Tool. In order to access these estimates within EpiViz, please visit: https://collab2020.healthdata.org/epi/
Brief instruction documents on using EpiViz and reviewing risk factors preliminary results can be found HERE and HERE. Additionally, you can find a video from a previous GBD cycle describing how to use the visualization tool to vet results HERE*.

*PLEASE NOTE: The links and dates in this video are from past years, but the techniques and instructions for using EpiViz to vet results are still accurate.

To review the data sources used in each risk factor and non-fatal model, access the sources tool at: http://ghdx.healthdata.org/gbd-2020/sources.

III. Important background information on new aspects of these estimates

These preliminary estimates for GBD 2020 risk factors exposure and non-fatal estimates include:
1-5 months In GBD 2019 this was part of the Post Neonatal age group
6-11 months In GBD 2019 this was part of the Post Neonatal age group
12 to 23 months In GBD 2019 this was part of the 1-4 years age group
2 to 4 In GBD 2019 this was part of the 1-4 years age group

These preliminary estimates for GBD 2020 risk factors exposure and non-fatal estimates do not include:
Non-Fatal Causes
As you review these preliminary estimates you may notice that, at this time, some non-fatal causes are not available for review. These causes are being updated by research teams. You can review the list of non-fatal causes included in EpiViz HERE.

Risk Factors Exposure
As you review these preliminary estimates, please note that currently certain custom risk factors are not viewable in EpiViz:
What about COVID-19?
We know there is great interest in the estimation of the burden due to COVID-19. In GBD 2020, estimates for non-fatal outcomes for COVID-19 will be computed. As COVID-19 is a new cause in GBD 2020, we are still working to incorporate it into our estimation, which is why you do not see them in this set of preliminary results.

Lastly, please note that you are receiving privileged access to these preliminary results as a GBD Collaborator; these results are confidential and should not be cited or circulated.

Thank you again for your collaboration. We look forward to improving these results with your help.
