Unleashing the potential of vaccines for a healthier Europe

 02-09-2020

Compared to every other WHO region, the European Region has the lowest mortality figures for children under the age of 5. The Region has been free from poliomyelitis since 2002, and many Member States have also stopped the endemic spread of measles and rubella. These incredible achievements would not have been possible without immunization programmes, which ensure vaccines are readily available to prevent the spread of many diseases that could harm people’s health, prosperity and productivity.

A new international day to celebrate clean air – and a sustainable recovery from COVID-19

04-09-2020
The first ever International Day of Clean Air for blue skies on 7 September 2020 gives us an opportunity to celebrate the importance of clean air – something that is so fundamental to us all for our health and well-being. Air, both indoors and outdoors, can be contaminated by chemical, biological or physical agents that modify its natural characteristics. The global challenge of tackling air pollution is a two-fold problem.

REGIONAL DIRECTOR

Statement – Risk of #COVID19 resurgence is never far away, but now we know how to target the virus instead of targeting society

20-08-2020

Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe

The good news is that we now know much more about the transmissions of this virus, and in particular how it is spread indoors in poorly ventilated settings, and especially where large numbers of people are coming together and speaking loudly or singing. The challenge is that localized outbreaks and clusters are now occurring with greater frequency, often in closed settings, such as work places and care homes, or linked to specific events, social gatherings, communities, food production and other industrial facilities and travel. Recent outbreaks among vulnerable groups such as migrants and refugees illustrate how we cannot leave anyone outside of our protective efforts. The virus increases inequalities. As summer turns to autumn, what challenges lie ahead? We must make sure that we adopt the right public health measures to enable the safe return to school, manage the approaching influenza season, sustain our economies, and address the increased health risks to older people at this time of year...

Fanny Lopez, paediatric nurse supporting premature newborns and their parents

28-08-2020
“I am always amazed to see the potential and will in newborns to grow and develop. As caregivers, we are there help them develop to their full potential. Our care and support are particularly important when they are born premature,” says Fanny Lopez, a paediatric nurse working in the intensive care unit of the neonatal unit in Centre Hospitalier Rives de Seine, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.

“I have wanted to care for children since I was 10. I remember the day I first saw my newborn cousin. I was simply enthralled by the baby and remain fascinated with children of every age to this day.”
