When silence is not a virtue: how traditional masculinities keep men from seeking mental health advice

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, 10 October, WHO/Europe focuses on how masculinity norms can discourage men from recognizing and seeking help for mental health problems. A new Health Evidence Network (HEN) report on Mental health, men, and culture, launched by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, gives concrete recommendations on how policy-makers can address certain mental health issues arising from traditional patterns of masculinity.

Developing new partnerships for health at European Health Forum Gastein

WHO/Europe’s Regional Director begins visit to Russian Federation with commitment to global solidarity in fight against COVID-19

On the first day of a country visit to the Russian Federation, WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge met with Minister of Health Dr Mikhail Murashko and Head of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) Dr Anna Popova. Their discussions covered a number of topics, including the country’s response to COVID-19 and the importance of global cooperation in the ongoing pandemic. During a press briefing alongside the Minister of Health, Dr Kluge spoke of the importance of multilateralism and global cooperation. He commended the Russian Federation for its COVID-19 vaccine research and development efforts, and for sharing information with WHO as part of the global effort to find a safe and effective vaccine. Read the full article

Dr Ana Coeva is determined to provide care to all children in need

 The faces of doctors treating patients infected with COVID-19 are marked by goggles, longing for loved ones and hope for victory. One of those doctors is Ana Coeva, a paediatrician at the Emilian Coțaga Children’s Hospital in the Republic of Moldova.

What preoccupies Ana the most is being away from her family – particularly her five-year-old daughter, whom she has chosen not to see for the last month out of fear of infecting her, while she continues to work at the hospital.
