There is a well-developed healthcare system comprised of public and private health facilities, providing a comprehensive range of services from primary to high-technological care (including but not limited to cardio surgery, neurosurgery, liver and kidney transplantation, surgical care for injuries, etc.). The specialist care is accessible starting from district level to regional and central. In total there are 273 inpatients facilities with 15909 beds (426.9 hospital beds per 100,000 population). The country has got 2283 outpatient facilities, including 1267 rural physicians and 625 dental clinics. Number of physicians per 100,000 population is rather high 831.9 (statistics yearbook 2018 https://www.ncdc.ge/Pages/User/News.aspx?ID=a9ee8a02-ef7a-4d3a-b510-39aefd5872da&language=ka-GE).
All health service providers are formally licensed. According to WHO Euro assessment 89% of Georgia hospitals demonstrate high or average resilience to the impact of possible disasters, and are ability to continue safe operations under adverse conditions caused by emergencies (http://www.euro.who.int/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/420384/Hospital_Safety-Report_WHO_web.pdf?ua=1). Several hospitals and laboratories have got international accreditation (Joint Commission International, ISO, WHO).
Georgia has become a popular tourist destination with a growing number of visitor looking for health services. The most popular medical services account for dentistry, cosmetology and plastic surgery. Every year Hundreds of foreign patients are coming to Tbilisi as a center of excellence for treatment with bacteriophages (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/perfect-predator-inside-tbilisi-clinic-pioneering-radical-superbug/.
The country has a countrywide network of pharmacies and enacted legal provisions for ensuring that the market is free of counterfeit pharmaceutical products and that physical conditions in manufacturing facilities and retail pharmacies are operating in conformity with established standards. This includes regulating the import, manufacture and export of pharmaceuticals (as assessed by WHO).
Local cases have not been reported in the country: malaria since 2010, typhoid since 2000 and cholera since 1972. The incidence of water and food-borne diseases does not exceed rates in Eastern Europe, including former Soviet countries. The country has strong real-time surveillance system for monitoring infectious diseases.
And finally, it is worth mentioning that the healthcare system development level enabled Georgia to implement innovative programs such as Hepatitis C elimination and become a model for many countries visiting Georgia for experience sharing.
