Istanbul: On 10 October 2016 the DO in consultation with the SMT decided that the advance coordination for individual missions to Turkey is no longer required. The same requirement for external workshops and events remains in place.

Pay attention to the regular security conditions for travellers.

Approval remains valid only if the security situation remains unchanged.

Based on the information provided by the Minister of Transport and confirmed recently by IGA and Ataturk Airport authorities find the following:

1. The new “Istanbul Airport” will be fully functional on 01 January 2019.
2. Beyond this date, all commercial flights of Ataturk Airport will be routed to Istanbul Airport; Ataturk Airport will only operate for cargo and private planes.
3. From 30 December until 31 December 2018 - 02.00 a.m., only Turkish Airlines will be flying (domestic and international) to Ataturk Airport; no landing or take offs for commercial foreign airlines.
4. On 31 December 2018 between 02.00 a.m. – 14.00 p.m. there will be no flights neither from Ataturk Airport nor the new Istanbul Airport due to transportation of planes; after 14.00p.m. until 00.00 only Turkish Airlines will initiate flights from the new Istanbul Airport.
5. Aeronautical service transition from Ataturk Airport to Istanbul Airport will commence on December 30 and end on December 31, 2018, including transportation of the airport equipment and heavy machinery. Road traffic congestion is expected in the direction from Yeşilköy to the Arnavutkoy District from 01:00 a.m. on 30 December to 31 December 2018.

UN Personnel and their dependants are advised to plan their official and private travels accordingly. During the airports transition time, it is recommended to check transportation status for road travel via municipality services in advance and use the alternate routes, if necessary.
