Respiratory disease surveillance A) Objective: to create a pilot epidemiological surveillance system for unusual respiratory events in the Imereti region; to strengthen laboratory capacity (through the introduction of multiplex PCR testing); • As part of the project, a new surveillance system was introduced in the Imereti and Adjara regions. • Training materials have been created, according to which epidemiologists of the Public Health Center, as well as doctors of the medical institution, have been trained. • Trainings were conducted for the staff of the Imereti zonal laboratory on the methods of PCR studies of respiratory viruses. • Multiplex PCR kits were purchased, as well as other laboratory reagents. • Samples collected during the 2017-2017 flu season were tested for respiratory viruses • Performing database recording and analysis. C) Expected results: The new pilot system will enhance monitoring of respiratory events. The potential of the Imereti zonal laboratory will increase.
