Subject: WHA73 side event application process

Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

The Secretariat wishes to invite Member States seeking to organise a side event at the Seventy-third World Health Assembly scheduled to take place from 17-21 May 2020, to submit an application. Applications will be accepted between the period: 3 March to 10 April 2020. The schedule of side events will be shared electronically and posted on GBS website in late April.

2020 has been declared the International Year of the Nurses and the Midwife. The Assembly would celebrate the contributions of nurses and midwives to the attainment of Universal Health Coverage.

As a limited number of spaces will be available due to the shortened duration of the Assembly and renovation work at the Palais de Nations, Member States are encouraged to seek broad multi-regional support for their proposal and where feasible, consider jointly organizing an event.

To apply for a side event, please complete the attached application form and send to: hqgoverningbodies@who.int by COB 10 April 2020. All applications received will be posted on the GBS website.

When preparing your application(s), kindly note that:

  1. A Member State may submit or co-sponsor only ONE proposal.

  1. After the selection process has been completed, Member States will be provided an opportunity to co-sponsor the side events until 10 May 2020.

  1. Member States should confirm their co-sponsorship of a side event by sending an email to cosponsorship@who.int.

  1. The selection process will be informed by the following criteria:

o   Completed application form received by the deadline

o   Applications that are aligned with the theme of the Assembly

o   Overall level of support among Member States. Applications co-sponsored by Member States across all six regional groups will be given priority

o   Innovative ideas and modalities for the event

  1. A total of 8 side events will be scheduled and held during lunchtime or in the evening for up to 90 minutes. Kindly note that the Secretariat cannot guarantee a specific date and time for an event as may be requested by a Delegation.

  1. While rooms for the side events will be made available free-of-charge, Member States will be responsible for costs of catering and interpretation services where requested.

  1. There is a separate application process for side events organized by non-State actors in official relations with WHO. For information about that process, please contact: nonstateactors@who.int.

  1. Organizations that are not in official relations with WHO should not be invited to co-organize side events with Member States, as such organizations do not have the necessary security clearance to access to the Palais des Nations.

Best Regards,

Dr Timothy Armstrong
